Coercive and controlling behaviour is a form of abuse, and whilst prevalent in domestic abuse cases, it is an offence in its own right. It can be found within an intimate, Carer or family relationship and is an exploitation of vulnerabilities. It can be hard to identify, and prove, and can be subtle and extreme. It is complicated, with wide-reaching ramifications and cuts across all demographics and ages, from teenagers to older people.
This training will increase your knowledge, understanding and confidence of this complex safeguarding issue, the impact of this over time and the risks it presents, and the law. By viewing this as an offence, you will understand the concerns and risks, and the importance of knowing the signs, identifying concerns, recording, inter-agency information sharing, escalating and reporting.
Learning Outcomes: Advance’s training will produce a range of learning outcomes for training participants including:
- Understanding the prevalence of coercive and controlling behaviour in incidents of domestic abuse;
- Understanding the legal framework for this form of abuse and how to report;
- Exploring cultural considerations, potential norms, expectations and the UK law;
- The need for effective questioning, curiosity and active listening including examples and tasks which enable you to question the scenario and explore the different outcomes;
- The importance of the voice of the young person or adult;
- An increased ability to understand and respond to coercive and controlling behaviours;
- Recognising the way in which a victim/survivor may hide what they’re experiencing or not recognise that they are in an unhealthy relationship;
- How to view this through a safeguarding lens and the impact it has on a person;
- Understanding intergenerational coercive and controlling behaviour, including learning from Brent;
- The roles and responsibilities within multi-agency working and information sharing.
