  • ICON (I – Infant crying is normal. C – Comforting methods can help. O – It's OK to walk away. N – Never, ever shake a baby) - a national, structured, practical programme to share and use in your practice.
  • Abusive head trauma ('shaken baby syndrome') is a head or neck injury from physical child abuse. Just a few seconds of violently shaking a baby can cause a whip-lash like injury and sometimes permanent, life-changing brain damage and even death. It is the most common and severe baby injury. It is 100% avoidable.
  • How most cases happen when a parent or caregiver cannot cope with the baby crying. It occurs in all demographic groups and may be influenced by ACEs, substance abuse, and household pressures, but may not be. In 70% of cases the perpetrators are male.
  • Safer Sleeping, which can significantly reduce the chances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS or 'cot death'), and  other good practice to keep babies safe.
